Five offline RPGs that don't need a server

Five offline RPGs that don't need a server

Mobile RPGs get a bad reputation, mostly because so many of them are online-only shells built around energy timers. But there's a quiet corner of the genre full of proper single-player adventures that run entirely offline, and those are the ones worth your storage.

The best of them share a few traits. They save often and reliably, so a dropped connection or a killed app never costs you progress. They keep battles quick enough for short sessions. And they tell a story you actually want to follow rather than a thin excuse to grind.

Ashvale Chronicles is my current favorite in this space — branching dialogue, a compact but complete world, and combat that rewards thinking over grinding. It proves you don't need an always-on server to deliver a real RPG on a phone.

When you're shopping for one, check the reviews specifically for the word offline. Developers sometimes list a game as playable offline when they mean it caches for a while before demanding a check-in. Read carefully before a long trip.

My practical advice: start any new RPG with a short session on wifi so it can finish downloading assets, then it's yours to play anywhere.
